Houston, TX

Hindu Congress of America (HCA) offers its deepest sympathies and offers condolences to the family of Mr. Srinivas Kuchibhotla. Mr.Kutchibhotla sadly lost his life after being shot at a bar in suburban Kansas City in Olathe, KS. Also, his friend named Mr. Alok Madasani and another patron at the bar Mr. Ian Grillot have been injured in this shooting incident. Both Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani work at Garmin Inc. which has a customer service center in Olathe, KS.

HCA strongly condemns the gunman Mr. Adam Purinton whose actions have been fatally cut a life short and gravely wounded two other. HCA requests the US government and the investigating & prosecuting agencies to take strict action against the shooter and take steps ensuring that such incidents are avoided the future. The shooting has left the whole Indian community in the United States in a state of shock and horror.

This shooting comes at a time when there is an increase in hate crimes and acts against minorities since last year as reported by the F.B.I. This irrational act of murder was perpetrated by Mr. Purinton as he mistakenly thought of the Indian engineers to be of Middle-Eastern origin. The Xenophobic intention of the murderer was apparent when he yelled “Get out of my country” as per this article in New York Times.

HCA salutes the courageous actions of Mr.Ian Grillot who intervened to save other patrons in the bar from the bullets of the murderer. Mr. Grillot has taken bullets in the chest and his arms and is seriously injured in the shooting. HCA would like to wish Mr. Grillot a very speedy and healthy recovery and also hopes that his life is restored back to normalcy at the earliest. Mr. Grillot‘s statement downplaying his heroics that “No, it’s not like that. I was just doing what anyone should have done for another human being. It’s not about where he’s from or his ethnicity. We’re all humans, so I just felt I did what was naturally right to do” affirms our faith in this country, its ideals and the goodwill of the people who are born here and the people who choose to call this home.

A gofundme page has been set up to help send the mortal remains back to India. We strongly urge the Hindu community in America to come together in this time of suffering for the family and generously donate in this cause of sending back Mr. Kuchibhotla’s remains.
